ANNUAL MEETING AND ELECTION

March 8, 2005 is Township Day in Minnesota. All Townships will be holding elections

and annual meetings.. Polls are open at Corinna Town Hall from Noon to 8:00 P.M. Absentee Ballots are available at township office, 9214 Kilbury Avenue NW. The Annual Meeting will begin after the polls close.

Ken Jude is the only candidate to file for the position of Supervisor. Ken needs no introduction since he served for ten years as Wright County Commissioner from District I. Incumbent, Dave Stumpf, did not file.

A unique feature of Township government is that the voters that attend the Annual Meeting have a direct voice in controlling Township finances. The budget presented by the supervisors must be approved by the electors present. Residents in attendance control the township taxes. Other items at the meeting are the reports from the Town Board on completed and proposed activity. One item which, thankfully, will not be on the agenda is the reconstruction of 80th Street (Strawberry Shortcut). The project needs just the final lift of blacktop and some shoulder work for final completion.

Items of business may be brought up from the floor by any voter present.

WINTER WOES

Our clerk spends a lot of time fielding calls about mail boxes damaged by the township snow plows. As a general rule, the township will not repair or replace the damaged post or box. In most cases, the damage has been caused by snow rolling off the plow and not by a direct hit by the blade. It is a problem and a concern. There is a solution for most damaged mail boxes.

The solution is swing away mailbox supports. First, the post is located far enough from the road surface so that the support post is out of the path of the plow. Second, if the snow coming off the plow should strike the support arm, it will swing. The USPS recommends that the bottom of the box be 42-44 inches from the ground. This is high enough to allow a wing plow to pass under it, provided no newspaper boxes are placed below the mailbox.

Some other recommendations would include: No post may be greater than a wood 4x4. A 5x6 or 6x6 won’t break, but it does leave the owner liable for damages to equipment or other vehicles striking them. Concrete posts are never approved. The attractive vinyl boxes that fit over a 4x4 look great but are very susceptible to damage. Please help us solve the problem. Swing away supports are available at cost from the township for $42.00.

This review meeting is especially important to attend if you feel that the assessor is not aware of special property conditions.
